About McAllen, Texas

McAllen is a city of 142,210 people in Hidalgo County, at the southern tip of Texas, across the Rio Grande from Reynosa. Spain granted this land in 1767, and JosΓ© Manuel GΓ³mez started the Santa Anita Ranch here around 1797. His great-granddaughter SalomΓ© BallΓ married John Young, and after Young died in 1859, his assistant John McAllen ran the ranch. McAllen married the widow in 1861, and the ranch took his name.

The railroad reached the Santa Anita Ranch on August 20, 1904, because John McAllen and his son James had given it land to cross their property. On December 5 the two men, with Uriah Lott, Leonidas C. Hill Sr. and John J. Young, formed the McAllen Townsite Company. The town grew slowly, so on May 16, 1907, John Closner, William Briggs and O. E. M. Jones started a rival two miles east, known as East McAllen. By 1911 East McAllen had about 1,000 people while the original town had disappeared, and that year it was incorporated under the name McAllen.

  • 20,000 troops in 1916Trouble along the border in 1916 brought 20,000 troops from New York state to McAllen. The money they spent set off a boom, and the town grew from 1,200 people that year to 6,000 by 1920.
  • The bridge to ReynosaThe old bridge to Reynosa collapsed in 1934. In 1941 a suspension toll bridge, bought by the city and named the McAllen-Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge, took its place. Tourists followed, McAllen drew winter visitors and became a gateway to Mexico, and by 1954 the bridge was the number-two crossing into Mexico.
  • A segregated townAs farming replaced the old Hispanic ranching economy, Anglo newcomers took control, and McAllen was segregated. Real estate sellers kept neighborhoods apart, and schools for Mexican children stopped at the fifth grade until the late 1920s. In 1939 Hispanic patients were kept in a basement section of the hospital, and even Hispanic doctors were turned away.
  • A school with its own powerBy 1970 McAllen had a new air-conditioned high school that made its own electricity with natural-gas turbines, the first school in the country to do so. The city also had a 200-bed hospital, 860 businesses and 37,636 residents.
