About McGaffey, New Mexico

McGaffey is a community in McKinley County, set inside Cibola National Forest in the southern part of the county. State Road 400 ends here, after running 11 miles south from Interstate 40 near Fort Wingate. The 2020 census counted no one living in McGaffey year-round, but about a dozen cabins fill with seasonal residents, and campers, anglers and hikers come for the forest.

“The town itself housed as many as 200 families, most of them in rows of company houses laid out neatly in the nearby woods.”
U.S. Forest Service, 1986
  • A Vermont woodsman's nameThe community carries the name of Amasa B. McGaffey. He was born in Lyndon, Vermont, in 1870 and grew up in the rough timber country of the Green Mountains. His story appears in the Forest Service's 1986 history of the Zuni Mountain railroads.
  • Fishing at McGaffey LakeMcGaffey Lake, a small reservoir, sits in the community's northeast corner and draws people to fish. Its water flows south toward Tampico Draw and the Rio Nutria, which runs on to the Rio Pescado and the Zuni River in the Little Colorado River watershed.
  • Campgrounds in the forestThe Forest Service's McGaffey Campground lies just south of the center of the community, and the Quaking Aspen campground is nearby. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding forest. Cattle ranches still work the land around McGaffey, and a quarry operates about 2 miles south.
