About McKee City, New Jersey

McKee City is a census-designated place of 9,758 people in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County, near Mays Landing. Col. John McKee, an African American property speculator, founded it in 1884 and gave it his name. He hoped it would grow into a planned community of 4,000 acres, a place where Black families leaving the South could make new homes once the Civil War was over.

The settlement began as farm country beside the Pennsylvania-Reading Railroad, whose route the Black Horse Pike now follows. Its first buildings were a sawmill, a school, a general store and a community hall, set among several farms. McKee put up plain dormitory-style houses with no indoor plumbing or heat, and his leases required tenants to improve the land they worked. He died in 1902, before most of his plans came true.

  • Born free in 1821John McKee came into the world in Virginia in 1821, the son of Black parents who had been freed. He joined the 12th Regiment, U.S. Colored Infantry, in 1863, and later rose to lieutenant colonel in the 13th Regiment, where his commander was General Louis Wagner.
  • Real estate from 1866McKee turned to real estate in 1866, once the war was over. He helped freed people find homes to rent and land to farm, and his business made him famous as the richest man of color in the nation.
  • A $2 million bequestIn 1899 McKee wrote a 27-page will meant to keep McKee City growing, and he tucked a picture of himself, dressed in his Civil War uniform, into the envelope. He left $2 million for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia under Archbishop Patrick John Ryan to manage, partly to build a church, a rectory and a convent for the town.
  • The parish on McKee's acresMcKee's family challenged the will, so the money was never paid out and the church, rectory and convent were never built. The 10 acres he had set aside for the church later became the site of St. Katharine Drexel Parish.
  • From race track to mallSome of the land McKee once owned turned into the Atlantic City Race Course, and some turned into the Hamilton Mall, which opened in 1987. Over time, stores and neighborhoods replaced the tenant farms he had leased out.
