About Meckling, South Dakota

Meckling is a community of 48 people in Clay County, in southeastern South Dakota's Missouri River valley. In 1872 the Dakota Southern Railway was built through the area, and the town later took its name from Jonas S. Meckling, a contractor who did grading work on the line. Meckling was platted in 1873, and many people from the nearby town of Lincoln packed up and moved there. Business at its stockyards boomed, and Meckling grew into a busy place for shipping.

  • Hay Capital of the UniverseAlfalfa is the crop of choice on the fertile farmland around Meckling, and so many farms grow it that the town came to be called the Hay Capital of the Universe. Gayville, the next town over, calls itself the Hay Capital of the World, and every August the two towns hold Hay Days together.
  • School's out in 1965Meckling's own school closed in 1965, and residents got to decide whether their children would go to school in Gayville or in Vermillion. Today the town is part of Vermillion School District 13-1.
