About Meeker, Colorado

Meeker is a town of 2,374 people and the county seat of Rio Blanco County, in the White River valley of northwestern Colorado. After that uprising and the Ute War that followed, Congress passed a law in 1880 that forced the Utes to move to reservations in Utah.

The U.S. Army then set up a garrison called the Camp at White River on the ground where the town stands today. Once the troops left, Meeker was founded in 1883, and two years later, in 1885, it became the first incorporated town in northwestern Colorado. For several generations it served as the region's main center of trade and banking.

  • A museum in Army buildingsSome of the wooden buildings from the old Army garrison still stand. Today they house the White River Museum, just north of the Rio Blanco County Courthouse. The 1879 agency site lies west of town along State Highway 64, where a large sign marks the spot, though none of the agency buildings survive.
  • Roosevelt at the Hotel MeekerBy the turn of the 20th century, Meeker had become a center for hunting in the region. Theodore Roosevelt came twice, in 1901 and 1905, to hunt mountain lions and bears, and he stayed at the Hotel Meeker across from the courthouse. The first hotel was a long adobe building that had housed troops. In the 1890s the present building replaced it, and it has been the town's main hotel ever since. It joined the National Register in 1980.
  • Meeker Classic Sheepdog trialsMeeker is largely a ranching town, set in the White River valley at the base of a long ridge. Each year it hosts the Meeker Classic Sheepdog trials.
