About Craig, Colorado
Craig is a city of 9,060 people and the county seat of Moffat County, Colorado. It grew where Fortification Creek flows into the Yampa River, which people then called the Bear River. By 1878 ranches spread across the area, and travelers could cross the river at Himley's Ferry and buy supplies at Peck's Store, a trading post with a single room. A town called Windsor stood here by 1878, and another called Yampa by 1885.
William H. Tucker founded Craig, and the town was named for Reverend William Bayard Craig, who helped pay for it and lived from 1848 to 1916. Its post office opened on August 28, 1889, and the town became an incorporated city on July 15, 1908. When the western part of Routt County was split off to form Moffat County on February 27, 1911, Craig became the seat of the new county.
- The end of the lineThe Denver and Salt Lake Railway set out to link Denver with Salt Lake City, but its tracks never got farther west than Craig. The railroad reached town in 1913, and the line still ends here today as a Union Pacific branch that meets the main line at Bond.
- A bank built on hopeThe arrival of the railroad gave Craig a burst of confidence about its future. In 1917, during those hopeful years, the First National Bank Building went up in town, and it joined the National Register in 1997.
- Coal and Colorado's biggest plantIn the 1970s and early 1980s, builders put up several coal mines near Craig, along with what became the largest power generation plant in Colorado.
- Elk Hunting Capital of the WorldThe local chamber of commerce gives Craig the title of "Elk Hunting Capital of the World" for the hunters who come to the hills around town each year.
