About Williston, North Dakota
Williston is a city of 29,160 people and the county seat of Williams County, close to where the Yellowstone River joins the Missouri at the upper end of Lake Sakakawea. The town was founded in 1887. Railroad magnate James J. Hill named it for his friend Daniel Willis James, a capitalist and merchant.
The city lies on the southeast edge of the Williston Basin, a huge underground formation named for the town. It holds deposits of petroleum, coal and potash. Farming and ranching long carried the local economy. Then new drilling methods such as fracking opened the Bakken formation beneath the city, and Williston's population nearly doubled between 2010 and 2020.
“The post office, known as Little Muddy, was established here Jan. 15, 1884, with G. B. Metzger, postmaster. A few miles west on higher ground, during the construction of the railroad, a tent colony with a few log cabins sprung up along Siding 25, which was designated the Williston townsite.”
- Oil estimates that kept climbingIn 1995 the U.S. Geological Survey put the recoverable oil in the Bakken shale at 150 million barrels. By April 2008 the figure was about four billion barrels. In March 2012, after a lower shelf of oil was found, Continental Resources announced a possible 24 billion barrels.
- Mandak League champions in 1956The Williston Oilers played minor league baseball in the Mandak League from 1954 to 1957. They won the league championship in 1956 and played their home games at Ardean Aafedt Stadium.
