About Mendota, Virginia

Before 1860, Adam Hickmen of Kinderhook, New York, bought the river-bottom land across from the village. He named the farm Kinderhook, and the post office here used that name for many years. Henry C. Holly, a longtime merchant there, later changed the post office name to Mendota.

Hamilton Institute opened at Mendota in 1874. Ambitious young men and women from that part of the county attended it for decades. In 1903 the school was still fairly prosperous.
