About Meridian, New York
Meridian's first settlers, George Loveless and Abel Pasko, arrived about 1804. Growth was slow until William Ingham opened his store in 1815. After the War of 1812, New England families came for the fertile soil. In 1831 William Smith Ingham took over his father's business and greatly enlarged it. That store gave Meridian its first great push.
Meridian was once called Cato Four Corners. Many homes built in the Neoclassical style still stand around the village. One of them, the William Smith Ingham House, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
