About Brutus, New York

Brutus is a town of 4,311 people in Cayuga County, west of Syracuse, and no other town in the county has more residents. Its northern edge follows the Seneca River and the Erie Canal, and its eastern line is the border with Onondaga County.

  • Founded in March 1802The land that became Brutus was part of the Central New York Military Tract. In March 1802 the town was split off from Aurelius and made a town of its own, and residents gathered for their first town meeting a year later, in March 1803.
  • A name from the classicsBrutus did not take its name from a settler or a founding family. A clerk with an interest in the classics chose it for the new town.
  • Weedsport, the largest villageThe village of Weedsport, in the northern part of the town, is the largest settlement in Brutus. About 40% of the town's people live there, and the town court sits in the village.
