About Sennett, New York

Sennett is a town of 3,304 people in Cayuga County, in the Finger Lakes region near the north ends of Owasco Lake and Skaneateles Lake. Its land was once part of the Central New York Military Tract, ground the state held for veterans of the war. Daniel Sennett, a circuit judge, settled here in 1795. When a new town was carved out of Brutus and Aurelius on March 19, 1827, it took his name.

  • Named for Daniel SennettDaniel Sennett was a public official and one of the area's early settlers. He came in 1795, more than thirty years before the town that carries his name was organized.
  • Land for Throop in 1859Sennett's borders shifted after its founding. In 1859 part of the town was handed over to help make up the town of Throop, and some of its southwestern land later went to its neighbor, the city of Auburn.
  • Once Fellows CornersThe hamlet of Sennett, on NY-5 northeast of Auburn, was once known as Fellows Corners. The Sennett Federated Church stands there, north of NY-5 where Turnpike Road meets Weedsport-Sennett Road. The congregation still worships in it, and the church and its parsonage are on the National Register of Historic Places.
