About Middle River, Maryland

Middle River is a community of 33,203 people in Baltimore County, Maryland. A train station called Middle River was already marked on G.M. Hopkins & Co.'s 1877 map of the county, and by 1898 the stop had its own post office and a small grid of streets.

The place changed when Glenn L. Martin chose it for a new aircraft factory. He bought 1,260 acres along the water, and the first part of the plant went up in 1929.

  • Aero Acres in 1941The town grew in the 1930s and 1940s to house people working at the Martin plant, and it built Aero Acres beside the railroad tracks and Martin Boulevard. The architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill drew gable-roofed Cape Cod houses, 24 by 28 feet, with big commercial-style windows in the main rooms. In 1941 builders put up 600 of them in Cemento, a cement and asbestos material.
  • Called Little AppalachiaMany Appalachian families moved to the Baltimore area before, during and after World War II, and many of them settled in Middle River. Most came looking for work, and so many arrived that the community was once known as "Little Appalachia."
  • Schools for Martin familiesVictory Villa Elementary School opened in the 1930s to teach the children of Martin employees, and it was rebuilt in 2018. Martin Boulevard Elementary followed in the 1950s and was rebuilt on its own grounds in the 1990s as the community kept growing.
