About Middleway, West Virginia
Virginia lawmakers founded the town of Smithfield in 1786, on land of John Smith II and William Smith. The state already had another Smithfield when a post office opened in 1806. This town had become a center of trade between its neighbors. So its post office was named Middleway.
Middleway was first called Smithfield. The village grew up around Smith Tavern, built about 1740 along what was then the main line of travel between east and west. The old log tavern was later covered with weatherboard, and people still lived in it when the guide was written.
