About Mill Creek, Washington

Mill Creek is a city of 20,926 people in Snohomish County, about 20 miles northeast of Seattle. Farm families settled the area early in the 20th century. When the Bothell-Everett Highway was built in 1913, small stores and filling stations opened at Murphy's Corner and Wintermute's Corner to serve travelers. In 1931 Dr. Manch N. Garhart bought 800 acres here, raising cattle and growing Gravenstein apples and Bartlett pears on what he called Lake Dell Farm. Demand for local fruit and lumber fell off, and in 1967 he sold the farm to real estate developers.

The developers saw the land, close to the new Interstate 5, as the site for a planned city they called Olympus. A recession in the early 1970s stalled the project, and in 1973 it was sold to Tokyu Land Development. The master plan went to the county council in January 1974, work on an 18-hole golf course and country club began in early 1975, and the first homes were going up a year later. By early 1983 most of the 1,767 homes and condominiums in the first phase were finished, and the population had passed the 3,000 needed for cityhood. Residents voted yes, and Mill Creek became a city on September 30, 1983.

“In the early twentieth century, a few logging and shingle mills dotted the land that would later become the city of Mill Creek.”

  • First called KlahanieWhen Tokyu Land Development took over the project, the new owners named the community Klahanie, a word from Chinook Jargon. About a year later they changed it to Mill Creek. Years after that, a small stream called Smokehouse Creek was renamed Mill Creek, so the city finally got a stream to match its name.
  • Mill Creek homes in JapanThe first houses were built to look like roomy country homes, with plenty of wood inside, and they sold for an average of $65,000. Tokyu Land Development liked the designs enough to use them again back in Japan, and in the 1990s buyers there could purchase homes marketed with the Mill Creek name.
  • A new city in 1983No new city had formed in Snohomish County since Brier in 1965, and none anywhere in Washington since Ocean Shores in 1970. Sid Hanson, who led the incorporation committee, became the first mayor and served one term, choosing not to run again in 1987. The post office promised at incorporation finally opened in 1994.
  • Mill Creek Town CenterIn the late 1980s the city planned a downtown for land it had just annexed beside the highway. Finding a developer took years, but construction started in 2001 and the first phase opened in 2004. The second phase, finished in 2007, brought a downtown plaza, condominiums, a medical clinic and 26 buildings for shops.
