About Millsboro, Delaware

Millsboro is a town of 6,863 people in Sussex County, at the head of the Indian River. In the second half of the 17th century, settlers came up from Accomack County, Virginia, to cut timber along the streams. At one point the area had seven lumber mills, and the biggest employed more than 70 workers. Stores, a bakery, blacksmith shops and Anglican and Presbyterian congregations grew up around them, though the place was not yet incorporated.

Before the Revolution this ground belonged to the Province of Maryland, first in Somerset County and later in Worcester County. Elisha Dickerson dammed the Indian River in 1792, and his dam is counted as the official start of the town, which was then known as Rock Hole. More mills followed as the town grew, and Millsboro was incorporated in 1893.

  • Both of Delaware's extremesOn January 17, 1893, observers in Millsboro recorded 17 degrees below zero, the coldest reading in the state. On July 21, 1930, they recorded 110 degrees, Delaware's hottest. Only Chester, Massachusetts, and Warsaw, Missouri, also hold both of their states' records, though Millsboro's readings are not official because they came from amateur observers and the town has no weather station.
  • A school district in 1883On March 8, 1883, state lawmakers in the Delaware General Assembly set up Millsboro School District 23. The town's district joined with Indian River on July 1, 1969, and Millsboro's schools are still part of the Indian River School District.
  • Home of the NanticokeMembers of the Nanticoke people and related tribes have lived in Millsboro, and their families still live here today.
