About Milroy, Indiana
In the 1880s, natural gas fever swept parts of Indiana and Ohio. In the summer of 1887, leading citizens of Milroy believed their town sat inside the gas belt. They set out to settle the question. The result was a well about 1,000 feet deep with a strong flow of gas.
Thomas J. Laramore built the Milroy Mills on Flat Rock Creek in 1835. For fully half a century, local farmers relied on them to grind their grain into flour and meal. Its stones were later driven by an engine and boiler plus an overshot water wheel turned by the creek.
- Schools lost and rebuiltSallie Bartlett taught school at Milroy during 1828 and 1829, using Nathan Julian's house. In 1855 the township trustees, the Masons and the Sons of Temperance built a school and hall together. It burned down within a few years. In 1860 the trustees hired Deliscus Lingenfelter to build a brick schoolhouse.
