About Monterey, Tennessee

Monterey is a town of 2,746 people in Putnam County, at the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau. Long before there was a town, travelers on Avery's Trace steered by a landmark called the Standing Stone, which is believed to have once marked a line between Cherokee and Shawnee lands. By 1805 three families had made permanent homes nearby, and the Standing Stone Inn opened to serve migrants heading west.

As the Tennessee Central Railway climbed the mountain from Cookeville, ten investors calling themselves the Cumberland Mountain Coal Company bought coal land from T.J. Whittaker. They planned a company town with homes and businesses for their workers and hired Maj. Robert John Moscrip to lay it out. Moscrip also won the contest to name it, choosing Monterey, meaning "King of the Mountains," because coal was king. The town was founded when the tracks arrived in 1893.

  • A railroad town and resortThree years after the tracks arrived, Baxter shifted the Tennessee Central's engine service shops and its crew change stop from Cookeville to Monterey. Around the turn of the century the railroad also promoted the town as a resort, and it became an important one.
  • The Crawford Branch by 1894After laying out the town, Moscrip engineered the railroad line out the Crawford Branch into Overton County, and it was running by 1894. A woman contractor built part of that line, something unheard of at the time. Moscrip kept opening coal lands for the Alexander Crawford family until 1904.
  • The Officer house killingsIn the spring of 1864, Colonel William B. Stokes led 200 Union soldiers into the Monterey area under orders to stamp out Confederate guerrillas. On the morning of March 12, his men burst into William Alexander Officer's home near Monterey, accused six of his guests of being guerrillas and killed them. A Tennessee Historical Commission marker on Commercial Avenue recalls that day.
  • Where two rivers beginThe Calfkiller River and the Falling Water River both rise just west of Monterey, one on each side of Interstate 40.
