About Montesano, Washington

Montesano is a city of 4,138 people and the seat of Grays Harbor County, on the Chehalis River. Isaiah Lancaster Scammon left Maine in 1849 to try the California Gold Rush, found little there, and in 1850 reached the Chehalis River inland from Grays Harbor. He filed on 640 acres where the Wynoochee meets the Chehalis. His wife Lorinda had run a boarding house in Maine, and she turned their wood-frame home into an inn that travelers called the "Scammon's Hotel."

Lorinda, a devout Protestant, first named the place Mount Zion, but Samuel James persuaded her that Montesano, meaning "mountain of health," sounded better. When Chehalis County needed a new seat, voters chose Montesano over Cosmopolis, Chehalis Point and Satsop, and on January 28, 1860, the seat was set at the Scammon homestead. For 26 years county and court business ran out of the family's house, with Isaiah acting as judge, postmaster and ferryman. In 1886 county voters moved the seat across the river to the platted town, and the old homestead became South Montesano.

“Here we are. We mean to stay. And we mean business”
The Vidette, 1883
  • A town laid out in 1870Charles N. Byles arrived as a schoolteacher in 1865 and in 1870 bought 160 acres from the Scammons on the north side of the river. He laid out a town there and gave it the Montesano name, and Samuel H. Williams helped plat it. William Medcalf and his three sons cut the first stretch of wagon road through the lower valley, which is now Main Street. The Washington Territorial Legislature incorporated the town on November 26, 1883.
  • The Sylva Creek sawmillMichael Luark left the Midwest for the Chehalis Valley in 1853. On John Fry's advice he bought irons and a waterwheel in Portland, and in 1869 he started a water-powered mill on Sylva Creek. Fry helped build it for pay in lumber, which he used to put up John Esmond's store, the town's first permanent business, in 1872. With a circular saw and planer added in 1883, the mill cut up to 10,000 board feet a day.
  • The Vidette in 1883J. E. Calder and J. W. Walsh pooled their money for a $400 army hand press and started The Vidette, the first newspaper in Chehalis County. The law required anyone buying government timber to print that plan in a newspaper, so a local paper saved buyers the trip to Olympia. No paper in the continental United States was published farther west.
  • The 1911 courthouseThe Grays Harbor County Courthouse, finished in 1911, rises three stories to a domed tower, and murals of local history line its interior. A dent in the front door was left by the sheriff when he fired at a fleeing felon.
