About Aberdeen, Washington
Aberdeen is a city of 17,013 people in Grays Harbor County, where the Wishkah River flows into the Chehalis. The Lower Chehalis people had fished, gathered shellfish and hunted around the bay for thousands of years before Robert Gray sailed the Columbia into it in May 1792. In 1868 Samuel and Martha Benn traded their homestead upriver at Melbourne for land her father, Reuben Redman, owned where the two rivers meet.
The Benns built their holdings up to about 740 acres. They offered land grants to newcomers who would build canneries and sawmills. George W. Hume of Astoria took one in 1873 and opened a salmon cannery on the river that fall. In 1884 Benn hired a surveyor to lay out his land, then recorded a town plat. That June a Michigan lumberman, A. J. West, arrived, and his sawmill was running a month later. Aberdeen was incorporated on May 12, 1890. In 1895 a spur that Aberdeen and Hoquiam residents built together linked the town to the Northern Pacific.
“I lived upon my ranch at Melburn [Melbourne] for nine years and having become acquainted with the country and believing that some day there would be a great city on Grays Harbor and conceiving the idea that the place for that city was where this Wishkah river empties into the Chehalis, I located where the city of Aberdeen now lies”
- Almost called HeravilleWhen Benn went to record his town in 1884, he meant to name it Heraville. Hume showed him a letter by an early settler, Jean Stewart. She pointed out that Aberdeen in Scotland sits at the mouths of the Don and the Dee, just as this town sat at the mouths of two rivers. Benn changed the name to Aberdeen. Other town histories credit the Aberdeen Packing Company of Ilwaco, which bought Hume's cannery.
- The Port of Missing MenBy 1900 the town was full of saloons, brothels and gambling halls. So many people were murdered that Aberdeen came to be called "The Port of Missing Men," and some knew it as "The Hellhole of the Pacific." Billy Gohl was said to have killed at least 140 men and dumped them in the Wishkah River. In the end he was convicted of two murders.
- Sawmills from 37 to 9The Great Depression hit Aberdeen hard and cut its major sawmills from 37 to 9. Loggers had cleared most of the area by the late 1970s, and the mills that were left shut down in the decade that followed.
- Home port of the Lady WashingtonThe tall ship Lady Washington sails from Aberdeen. She is a reproduction of a smaller vessel used by Robert Gray, the captain who first brought an American ship into the harbor, and she appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
- Kurt Cobain Memorial ParkThe city opened Kurt Cobain Memorial Park in 2011, near where the musician lived in Aberdeen. Its plaque carries a line from his song "Come as You Are."
