About Ocosta, Washington

Ocosta got its name about 1891, while George E. Filley was trustee of the land company that owned the site. Mrs. Filley and William H. Calkins of Tacoma chose it. They took the Spanish words la costa, meaning the coast, and added an O for a pleasing sound. The older native name was Nushiatska.

Ocosta grew out of a feud between Aberdeen and the Northern Pacific Railroad. Aberdeen refused to pay the railroad to come, so the line built this town to bypass it. Trains reached Ocosta in May 1892. The railroad soon judged the harbor unfit and made a deal with Aberdeen instead. In 1932 residents voted 58 to 5 to end the town government.
