About Morada, California
Morada is a community of 4,054 people in San Joaquin County, on the edge of Stockton. Its name is the Spanish word for residence. The district lies between Stockton and Lodi along Cherokee Lane, which was also US Highway 99, and it grew from 3,828 people in 2010.
- The Cherokee IndiansIn the mid-1930s, coach George Horita built a baseball team called the Cherokee Indians from a tight group of schoolboys. Most of them lived in the Morada district along Cherokee Lane, and Horita made them one of Northern California's best teenage teams.
- The Nisei Ted WilliamsFrank Horita was the best player the Cherokee Indians produced, and people called him the Nisei Ted Williams. In 1940 he hit .404 and won the batting crown of the NCJBL.
- Feeding the Stockton YamatosThe Morada boys later moved up together, almost like a farm team, and became the core of the Stockton Yamatos. The Yamatos went on to rule the state's Japanese American semipro baseball competition, in what the 1992 Stockton Assembly Center reunion booklet called the golden age of Japanese American sports.
