About Morse, Texas
Morse is a community of 157 people in southwestern Hansford County, Texas, on the Hutchinson County line. It began in 1929, the year the North Texas and Santa Fe Railway built into this part of the county, and a new town grew up along the tracks. Within that first year Morse had a post office and a weekly newspaper of its own. Spearman, the county seat, lies 22 miles to the northeast.
- Named for the chief engineerThe town took its name from Charles A. Morse. He was chief engineer of the North Texas and Santa Fe Railway, the line whose arrival in 1929 brought the settlement into being.
- The Morse Monitor, 1929Morse had a newspaper almost from the day it was founded. The Morse Monitor printed its first issue on March 27, 1929, the same year the railroad reached town.
- Ruth Etta Powers, postmistressWhen the Morse post office opened in 1929, Ruth Etta Powers took charge of it as postmistress and handled the mail for the brand-new railroad town.
