About Moulton, Alabama

Moulton is a city of 3,398 people and the seat of Lawrence County, with the Bankhead National Forest to its south. When Alabama joined the Union in December 1819, the only building here was an inn for travelers on the roads to Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi and south Alabama. Moulton and Courtland, its neighbor to the north, both incorporated so each could bid for the county seat. Governor Thomas Bibb ruled that the county had to pick its most central town, and Moulton won.

The legislature incorporated Moulton on December 17, 1819, and the county seat moved here from Melton's Bluff. Within a year a village with a log courthouse had grown up around the inn, and Moulton has held the county seat since 1820. Planters from Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia came for the rich farmland, bringing enslaved people and livestock, while most townspeople farmed or kept stores.

  • Named for a fallen lieutenantThe town honors Lieutenant Michael Moulton, who fought under General Andrew Jackson in the Creek War. He was killed at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814.
  • Alabama's oldest weeklyThe Moulton Advertiser began printing in 1828 and has come out every week since, longer than any other weekly newspaper in Alabama. It is still the only newspaper in Lawrence County.
  • Three courthouses on the squareThe first log courthouse burned in 1859, and the county replaced it with a brick one the next year. That building was torn down in 1936 for the courthouse that stands today, at the heart of the Moulton Courthouse Square Historic District, which joined the National Register in 1998.
  • A women's school in 1852The Baptist Female Institute opened in Moulton in 1852 as a school for women. Moulton was also the birthplace of Mary Lee Cagle, who founded churches in the Holiness Movement and became one of the first influential women pastors in the Church of the Nazarene.
  • The storms of 1974 and 2011A tornado in 1974 killed 28 people in Moulton and injured 272, and the town rebuilt. On April 27, 2011, a storm system that killed more than 250 people across Alabama took one life in Moulton.
