About Mount Holly, North Carolina
Mount Holly is a city of 17,703 people in Gaston County, just west of the Catawba River. King George II began granting land in the area around 1750, and in 1754 James Kuykendall of Holland received a grant near Dutchman's Creek. A post office opened here in 1800 under the name Huntersville, for its postmaster, the Rev. Humphrey Hunter, and it was renamed Woodlawn in 1846.
In 1875 Daniel E. Rhyne, his brother Abel and Ambrose Costner started the Mount Holly Cotton Mill where Dutchman's Creek meets the Catawba. They named it for Mount Holly, New Jersey, a town famous for its fine yarns, and the community took the same name. The mill did so well that residents asked the North Carolina General Assembly to incorporate the town, and Mount Holly was incorporated in 1879.
- The county's oldest surviving millDaniel E. Rhyne was only twenty-two when he and Abel built their cotton mill. No other mill in Gaston County had been built before it except three, and of all the county's mills it is the oldest still standing. The mill joined the National Register in 1996.
- Woodlawn Mill and electric powerThe Woodlawn Mill on Woodlawn Avenue went up in 1906. It was the first mill anywhere in Gaston County to run on electricity, and it joined the National Register in 2023.
- A thread maker from 1891In 1891 Charles Egbert Hutchison started a company called Nims Manufacturing beside Dutchman's Creek. It grew into the American Yarn and Processing Company, which merged in 1952 with the Efird Manufacturing Company of Albemarle to form American & Efird. Now the world's second-largest thread maker, the company still keeps its corporate offices in Mount Holly.
- Gaston County's first railroadThe Carolina Central Railway, the first railroad in the county, reached Mount Holly in 1860, and CSX still runs trains on the line. Work on a second railroad, the Piedmont and Northern, started in 1911, and its first train ran from Charlotte to Gastonia on May 20, 1912.
