About Mount Ivy, New York

Mount Ivy is a hamlet of 7,657 people at the southern edge of the Town of Haverstraw in Rockland County, and part of it reaches across the line into the town of Ramapo. The Ramapough Mountain Indians lived in this region for many years, and the area later grew into an important Quaker settlement. The name is said to come from the high ground here and from a swamp full of ivy.

  • Gurnee's Corners and YorktownBefore it was Mount Ivy, the crossroads was known as Gurnee's Corners. The main road split here, with one branch heading south to Spring Valley and Hempstead and the other turning north as the old road to Suffern and Ramapo. Part of the American army took that northern road while marching from Kings Ferry toward the Head of Elk, the move that led to the siege of Yorktown and ended with Cornwallis captured.
  • Wayne's men before Stony PointDuring the Revolution, General Anthony Wayne's troops rested at Mount Ivy and kept themselves hidden here before they launched their assault on the fortress at Stony Point.
  • Rockland's first assemblymanThe Coe family held its old seat at Gurnee's Corners. Benjamin Coe represented Orange County in the New York Assembly, and when Rockland County got its own seat in 1799, he became its first member. In 1831 he was laid to rest on his own farm at Mount Ivy.
