About Mount Tabor, New Jersey

The Mount Tabor camp meeting began in 1866, the hundredth year of American Methodism. At a conference in Washington, New Jersey, the Rev. John Atkinson urged a camp meeting to mark it. A committee agreed, and a site was picked near Morristown. The first meeting was held in late August 1866.

Trustee David Campbell built the Arlington Hotel in 1877 for campers who did not want to sleep in tents. Once its income paid him back, the building was to pass to the association. The hotel later fell into ruin and was torn down. Part of its foundation now serves as a retaining wall by the parking lot.

  • Origin of the town's athletic fieldIn 1881, Richard Grant asked the trustees for land for a park on behalf of the young people of Mount Tabor. A plot 300 by 200 feet was set aside for archery, lawn tennis and croquet. It grew into the athletic field kept by the Tabor Field Club, with a golf course.
