About Mountain City, Tennessee
Mountain City is a town of 2,415 people and the county seat of Johnson County, in the far northeast corner of Tennessee. Leonard Shoun and Alexander Doran, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, were among the first settlers to stay here for good. At that time the land belonged to Carter County, and the trip to the county seat at Elizabethton was so hard that Johnson County was formed in 1836. That same year a new county seat was laid out on land bought from William Vaught and named Taylorsville, for Colonel James P. Taylor.
The town took the name Mountain City in 1885, probably because Roderick R. Butler pushed for it. Butler was a leading citizen and a U.S. congressman, and he wanted the name to show that the town sat in one of the state's highest valleys. Johnson County got railroad service in 1900, and the tracks finally reached Mountain City in 1910. At 2,418 feet, it is the highest incorporated city in Tennessee.
- Fiddlers in May 1925The first Mountain City Fiddlers Convention gathered musicians here in May 1925. It is remembered as a turning point for Appalachian music, and it did much to shape the growth of country music.
- Boone's gap in 1769Native American trails were already worn deep here when the first European explorers came. The Needham and Arthur expedition of 1673 likely crossed through the gap at Trade, south of town, and Daniel Boone used the same gap in 1769 on his way to what became Kentucky. Today the Daniel Boone Heritage Trail follows his route through Mountain City.
- A cave found in 1949Inside were several burials from the early Mississippian era, around 1000 A.D.
- Butler's mansionRoderick R. Butler, the congressman behind the town's name, lived here from his birth in 1827 until his death in 1902. He also trained young lawyers in his office, and one began studying law with him in May 1874. His mansion still stands close to the center of town, and the Butler House joined the National Register in 1973.
