About Mullins, South Carolina

Mullins is a city of 4,026 people in Marion County. It carries the name of William Sydney Mullins, who trained as a lawyer at the University of North Carolina and came south to Marion County in the early 1800s. He later represented the county in the state legislature from 1852 to 1866. The town's charter won approval on March 4, 1872, and that same year Macedonia Methodist became the first church inside the town limits.

Growth came slowly at first. In 1878 Mullins counted just 75 residents in 12 families, with three stores and four dirt streets named Railroad, Main, Smith and Gapway. Tobacco changed that after 1894, when farmers began growing and selling the leaf here. Mullins became the biggest tobacco market in the country, and in the late 1920s the town began a festival for the crop, the Golden Leaf Festival, which it still holds today.

“South Carolina's Largest, The world's best tobacco market.”

  • A school since 1872Mullins opened its first school in 1872, for boys and girls from town, nearby farms and neighboring counties. Its first real schoolhouse, two stories of brick, rose on Academy Street in 1904, and a second came in 1913 at Main and Academy. Mullins High School opened on North Park Street in 1923 and stood until fire destroyed it in 1976; it was rebuilt near the old Marion highway, outside the city limits.
  • The Palmetto School, 1919The Palmetto School for Negroes, serving both high school and elementary students, was built on Cypress Street in 1919. Around 1956 it was divided, with an elementary school on Broad Street and a high school on O'Neal Street. The high school graduated its last class in 1970, the year Mullins joined all its schools into one integrated system, and the building is now Palmetto Middle School.
  • A library since 1910Mullins opened its public library in 1910. The building it uses now, at the corner of North Main and Wine Streets, went up in 1940, and the library is a branch of the Marion County Library System.
  • A merchant as mayorAn early Marion County history describes D. E. Godbold, grandson of General Godbold, keeping a store in Mullins in partnership with W. McG. Buck. Godbold was serving as mayor of the town, and the writer called him steady and a first-rate businessman.
