About Musselshell, Montana
The town took its name from an old stockmen's landmark called Musselshell Crossing. In the 1880s, herds of Texas longhorns were driven north to the crossing. There they were bedded down for the last time. Then they were split into smaller herds for their Montana owners.
Musselshell was the oldest town in the county. In 1877 a trading post opened on the north bank of the river, across from the present town. A store and post office opened on today's town site. The old Fort Custer-Fort Maginnis road crossed the river here. For a long time the place was known simply as the Crossing.
