About Pompeys Pillar, Montana

Pompeys Pillar is a community of 51 people in Yellowstone County, Montana. It was founded in 1907 as a planned railroad station for the Huntley Project, an irrigation project run by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The town took its name from the tall rock that rises less than a mile to its west.

Trains on the Northern Pacific Railroad tied the new town to Billings, about 29 miles to the southwest. The people who settled here built two churches, one Catholic and one Union Congregational, and both are now gone. Children from Pompeys Pillar attend the Huntley Project K-12 Schools, named for the same irrigation project that created the town.

“Clark carved his name on the rock on July 25, 1806. Nicholas Biddle, the first editor of the Lewis and Clark journals, changed the name from Pompy's Tower to Pompeys Pillar.”

  • A landmark since 1965The rock was named a National Historic Landmark in 1965. In 2001 it gained a second honor when it became Pompeys Pillar National Monument, placed in the care of the Bureau of Land Management.
  • A museum opened in 2006A new visitor center and museum opened at the monument in 2006, the year of the Lewis and Clark Expedition's bicentennial. The site also has a small gift shop for visitors.
