About Ballantine, Montana

Ballantine is a community of 293 people in Yellowstone County, about 23 miles northeast of Billings. Its townsite sits on land that was once part of the Crow Indian Reservation. A station opened here in 1896 on the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad, which named the stop for E. P. Ballantine, a local homesteader. By 1907 the place had its own post office, and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad was running the trains.

That same year the federal government made Ballantine part of the Huntley Project, a Bureau of Reclamation irrigation district that also takes in Pompey's Pillar, Worden and Huntley. Water slowly turned the sagebrush into farms of sugar beets and alfalfa. Because the town stood near the middle of the project, settlers came here to trade, and by 1909 Reclamation counted a lumber yard, three stores, a church, a schoolhouse and a brand-new railroad depot.

“Ballantine residents showed their commitment to their community in 1921 when they erected a community hall that still is in use today.”

  • Immigrant farm familiesMany of the people who settled the newly irrigated land were immigrants from Europe. Catholics and Lutherans both held services in Ballantine, and the town's Congregationalists built a church of their own.
  • Anita Dam, finished in 1937Workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps completed the Anita Dam and its reservoir in 1937. The project lies about six miles southeast of Ballantine.
  • Both records in 1936Ballantine set its cold and heat records in the same year. The thermometer dropped to 50 below zero on February 15, 1936, and less than five months later, on July 5, 1936, it climbed to 110 degrees.
