About Huntley, Montana

Huntley is a community of 442 people in Yellowstone County, just east of Billings. It took its name from S.O. Huntley, a partner in the stagecoach company Clark & Huntley, and it grew at the point where steamboats could travel no farther up the Yellowstone. On June 6, 1875, the packet Josephine became the first steamboat to tie up here, but boats came only now and then.

A post office opened in March 1878, and the 1880 census found just 37 residents. The Northern Pacific Railroad reached the town in 1882 and connected it with Billings, which was then a new city. Three years after the trains arrived, Huntley Station had a hotel, a blacksmith and two stores. Many of the newcomers were German immigrants, and they founded Lutheran and German Methodist churches.

  • The Huntley Project, 1907In 1905 the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation began an irrigation project on land that the Crow Indian Reservation had held until 1904. The project took Huntley's name, and in 1907 it began delivering water to the dry district, with Huntley as its administrative center. That same year Ballantine, Worden and Pompey's Pillar were founded as new railroad towns on the project. Farms here still raise sugar beets, corn, wheat and barley.
  • Moved by the 1937 floodThe Yellowstone Flood of 1937 hit Huntley harder, for its size, than any other community in the region. The river destroyed much of the original town on its north side and claimed or damaged much of the ground it stood on. It also swept away the suspension bridge that carried Highway 312 across the water. After the flood, the town was rebuilt on higher ground on the south bank.
  • A weekly paper and a schoolThe Yellowstone County News, a weekly newspaper, is published in Huntley and covers the wider Billings area. Local children attend Huntley Project K-12 Schools, whose name still recalls the irrigation project that brought water here in 1907.
