About Worden, Montana

Worden is a community of 582 people in Yellowstone County, just south of the Yellowstone River. In 1868 the ground it stands on was reserved for the Crow people, inside the boundaries of their reservation. When the Northern Pacific Railroad was built through in 1882, it put up a station called Clermont here, 21 miles from Billings, on the far side of the tracks from today's town.

In 1907 the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation created the Huntley Project, an irrigation district that also takes in Ballantine, Huntley and Pompey's Pillar. Worden was mapped out that same year as one of its towns, and the old Clermont station took the new name. Water from the project turned the area into farm country, and the farms drew immigrants to settle here.

“Residents wanted to call the town Dixon, after U.S. Senator Thomas Dixon, but since there was already a Dixon in Montana, the name was not available. At Dixon's request, residents instead named the town for Dixon's wife, Frances, whose father, F. L. Worden, was one of the founders of Missoula.”
