About Shepherd, Montana
Shepherd is a farming community of 507 people in Yellowstone County, northeast of Billings and near the Yellowstone River. It takes its name from Russell E. Shepherd, who came west from New York and reached Billings in 1906. He soon formed the Billings Land and Irrigation Company to develop the bench land east of the city, and two years after his arrival he helped start the Merchants National Bank.
- A 65-mile canalFarming here depended on water, so Russell E. Shepherd put his money into the Billings Bench Water Association as one of its partners. He and other investors paid to dig a canal 65 miles long that brought water out of the Yellowstone River to irrigate the farms around the town that would carry his name.
- Post office since 1915Shepherd got its own post office in 1915. The town has never incorporated, and it remains an unincorporated farming community and a suburb northeast of Billings.
- Home of the MustangsThe Shepherd School District joins the town's elementary and high school districts and serves every grade from kindergarten to 12th. At Shepherd High School, the teams play as the Mustangs.
