About Pleasant Gap, Pennsylvania
Pleasant Gap is a community of 2,945 people in Centre County, set in the Nittany Valley along the northwestern foot of Nittany Mountain. Most of it lies in southern Spring Township, and a small piece reaches west into Benner Township.
Michael Swaney had made his farm here by 1800, long before there was a village. In 1845 his son John built the first house, and that same year the village was laid out on the Lewistown and Bellefonte pike, on ground owned by William Riddle and John Swaney.
“John Swaney says he can well remember how his father used to get up at night and chase wolves from his cabin door.”
- The Green Tree tavernJohn Swaney's house, the first in Pleasant Gap, was also its tavern. He kept the Green Tree there in 1845, in the new village laid out along the turnpike between Lewistown and Bellefonte.
- Gap Run through the mountainGap Run comes down off Nittany Mountain through the gap itself and flows on through town. On the northwestern side of the village it joins the Logan Branch, which runs north to Spring Creek.
- 2,945 people in 2020The Census Bureau counted 2,945 people in Pleasant Gap in 2020, up from 2,879 in 2010. The community's children attend the Bellefonte Area School District.
