About Custer, Montana
Custer is a community of 119 people in Yellowstone County, Montana. The Northern Pacific Railroad opened a station here in 1882, and a post office followed in 1905. Part of the town's business district came from Junction, a town on the north side of the Yellowstone River, and those stores were moved south to serve the farmers and ranchers who worked the land around Custer.
“Since the opening of the northern part of the reservation Custer has grown into quite a little village.”
- Named for General CusterThe town honors George Armstrong Custer, the U.S. Army general who was defeated and killed in 1876 at the Battle of Little Big Horn. That battle was fought not far from here.
- Home of the RebelsCuster runs its own school district, Custer K-12 Schools, which teaches students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The teams at Custer High School are called the Rebels.
