About Napoleon, Ohio

Napoleon is a city of 8,862 people and the county seat of Henry County, on the Maumee River 44 miles southwest of Toledo. The land here was part of the Great Black Swamp, and it opened to European settlers after the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794, fought about 26 miles to the east. The town was laid out in 1832 and named for the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, and its first home, a log cabin, was built that same year.

Growth came with the Miami and Erie Canal, which reached Napoleon in 1843 on its route of about 250 miles from Cincinnati to Toledo. German and Irish immigrants and local farmers dug it by hand for about 30 cents a day, and the canal drew German settlers and new trade. Two railroad lines followed. In the 1880s the population passed 3,000, and most of them worked for businesses that made goods for the farms around it.

  • Mills on canal waterThe canal also powered industry. Brick arch channels called flumes carried its water to the wheels of riverfront mills. Sayger's sawmill was the first, in 1843. John Ritter began grinding flour in 1850, and the Napoleon Woolen Mill opened in 1863. An Ohio historical marker at 255 West Riverview Avenue, the city building, credits those flumes with tying Napoleon into the national economy.
  • The price of the canal boomThe canal brought sickness along with business. Ague and cholera spread through the town and killed many people. Napoleon's first cemetery lay beside the canal's route, near 500 East Clinton Street, and a state marker now tells the story of both.
  • Camp Latty in 1861In the fall of 1861 the 68th Regiment organized at Camp Latty, at Riverview and Glenwood Avenues, a camp named for Judge Alexander S. Latty, a firm Union man. Its soldiers fought at Shiloh and Vicksburg, marched to the sea with Sherman and joined the Grand Review in Washington. A marker now stands at the east gate of Ritter Park.
  • The world's largest Campbell's plantToday Napoleon's economy rests on manufacturing. The largest Campbell's Soup Company plant in the world sits on the city's southeastern end, and Tenneco runs one of its largest elastomer plants here.
