About McClure, Ohio
The village dates to the late 1870s and was named for John McClure, who first owned part of the site. During the 1960s and early 1970s it was the last Ohio town still running a manual phone system. Callers turned a crank to signal the operator. Residents finally gave up their hand-cranked phones in November 1975.
When Ohio Bell would not run lines to rural residents near McClure, they formed their own phone company. Volunteers built the lines. In 1908 the new company bought out the Bell equipment, and in 1909 it took the name Citizens Mutual Telephone Company.
