About Nazareth College, New York

Nazareth College is the community that grew up around the campus of Nazareth University in Pittsford, Monroe County, and the census counted 1,182 people living there in 2020. Thomas Francis Hickey, the Bishop of Rochester, asked the Sisters of St. Joseph to open a college for young women, and five of the sisters founded it in 1924. Its first class met in Rochester, in a big Lake Avenue mansion that people called "the Glass House." Enrollment kept climbing, so in 1928 the college moved into a bigger building at 402 Augustine Street.

During the 1960s and 1970s the college began admitting men, and it became independent of the religious order that had started it. New York later changed its rules for what counts as a university, and on June 1, 2023, Nazareth College became Nazareth University. Its campus now covers 150 acres with 24 buildings, 11 of them residence halls.

“With newly minted doctorates from Fordham University in New York City, and extensive graduate study at Oxford University and the Sorbonne, five Sisters of St. Joseph launched Nazareth College. The first 25 students started classes on September 24, 1924, which came to be known as Naz Day.”
Nazareth University
  • The sisters' motherhouse, 1927The Golisano Academic Center went up in 1927 as the motherhouse where the founding Sisters of St. Joseph lived. It remains the biggest building on campus as well as the oldest. The university bought it from the sisters in 2003 and turned it into classrooms and offices, keeping the Linehan Chapel inside.
  • Lacrosse champions three timesThe Nazareth men's lacrosse team won the NCAA Division III national title in 1992, 1996 and 1997, and it has played in the national tournament nineteen times. In 2011 the men's volleyball team rose to first in the national rankings and won the Molten Division III championship.
  • The Battle of the BeaksSt. John Fisher University sits just a mile north, and it is Nazareth's traditional rival. Each year the two schools' men's basketball teams meet in a game known as the Battle of the Beaks.
  • An arts center from 1967The Arts Center opened in 1967 as the home of the theatre, music, and art and design departments. A renovation finished in September 2009 made it a place for dance and stage performances.
