About Perinton, New York
Perinton is a town of 47,479 people in eastern Monroe County, 10 miles southeast of Rochester. In 1788 Oliver Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham bought 2.6 million acres of Western New York wilderness. William Walker of Canandaigua then bought 36 square miles of that land and sent Glover Perrin, his cousin, along with his brother Caleb, to survey it into 66 equal lots. The tract was known as Township 12, Range 4.
In 1793 Perrin came to stay. His family and his six brothers and sisters with their families became the area's first permanent white settlers. They picked flat land with good water, at Egypt on today's Route 31 and at Perinton Center, where Turk Hill and Ayrault roads cross, and soon built mills, blacksmith shops, taverns and inns. Federal censuses first spelled the town Perrinton, and while it still belonged to Ontario County it was sometimes written Perrington.
- Fairport, the canal townBy the late 1820s Fairport, a village inside Perinton on the Erie Canal, was booming, though it waited until 1867 to incorporate. From the 1850s to the 1950s, Perinton's story was mostly Fairport's. The canal and the railroad, which arrived in the 1850s, made shipping cheap and easy, so companies grew up there: Cobb Preserving, DeLand Chemical, Taylor's Oil of Life and, later, American Can. Then came a fire department, a public library, street lights and parks.
- Farm country until the 1950sOutside Fairport, Perinton stayed mostly rural until the 1950s. Farms still work the land today, now ringed by subdivisions, office and industrial parks and open space. Because most of the town shares the Fairport school and postal districts, many people in Perinton say they live in Fairport even when their homes sit outside the village.
- Trail Town USAThe American Hiking Society named Perinton Trail Town USA, and the town still uses the title. Its Crescent Trail winds 35 miles over both public and private land. Powder Mills Park adds downhill and cross-country skiing, fishing and a fish hatchery, and in 2008 RelocateAmerica.com listed Perinton among the nation's 100 best places to live.
