About Gananda, New York

Gananda is a planned community of 5,867 people in Wayne County, covering parts of the towns of Walworth and Macedon east of Rochester. It was one of thirteen new towns that won federal loan guaranties through HUD's New Communities Program, which grew out of a 1970 law. Planners drew a city on 10,500 acres, with about 17,000 houses, 12 neighborhood centers, a regional shopping center and room for more than 90,000 people after 30 years.

The new city raised its flag on September 20, 1973, and its school opened in the first finished community building, at 1500 Dayspring Ridge. Its first graduates were the Class of 1974. But the Gananda Development Corporation ran short of money in 1973, and on top of its $22,000,000 HUD guaranty it asked for $14,000,000 more to avoid bankruptcy. HUD said no at the end of 1974, sold back all but 1,500 acres, and finished pulling out in 1977.

  • A school district for a cityNew York State created the Gananda Central School District for the planned city, and it could lease its buildings for classes by day and community use after hours. The first building held every grade until Richard Mann Elementary rose in the 1980s on the old community garden at 1366 Waterford Road. Since Ruben A. Cirillo high school opened in the early 2000s, the first building has housed grades 6-8 and district offices. About 1,200 students attend.
  • Farmland waiting for housesA 1974 farm magazine reported that the developers had bought 10,000 acres, about 15 square miles, a tract larger than either Trenton in New Jersey or Niagara Falls in New York. Local farmers rented much of that land until builders were ready for each parcel.
  • Half of a four-lane parkwayWhen HUD's money stopped, crews had already graded a roadbed for each direction of a planned four-lane Gananda Parkway, running from Eddy Road almost to Route 441. Only one side was ever paved, and it is the Gananda Parkway of today. The second roadbed can still be seen, and an easement is kept in case the town grows enough to need it.
  • Wires out of sightThe underground water, power, gas, phone and cable lines were among the first things the new city finished. Gananda's utility lines still run below ground, while poles carry them again once you cross into the neighboring towns.
  • The pool on Wildflower DriveThe one community pool the project completed, at 3290 Wildflower Drive, was run by residents until money troubles in the early 1990s led to its sale to the YMCA of Greater Rochester. The Y closed it for good in the early 2000s, and the pool and its building are now part of a private home. A public indoor pool opened at Richard Mann Elementary instead.
