About Walworth, New York
Walworth is a town of 9,253 people in Wayne County, on the county's western edge east of Rochester. Its first settlers were four brothers from Connecticut, Andrew, John, Samuel and Daniel Millet, who arrived in 1799 and put up the first log cabins where the hamlet of Walworth stands today.
Two more Connecticut men, Stephen and Daniel Douglas, followed in 1800. Stephen built the first frame house at the spot that became the hamlet's four corners, and the brothers kept a tavern there, so for a time the settlement was called Douglas Corners. On April 20, 1829, the state legislature split Walworth off from the Town of Ontario and named it for Reuben Walworth, a state official. It was the last town created in Wayne County.
- A Holstein pioneerTheron G. Yeomans, a Walworth farmer, was one of the early importers of Holstein cattle to this country. When breeders organized the Holstein-Friesian Association of America, he became its first president.
- The freeze of 1934Walworth's farms once held many fruit orchards. In 1934 a freeze reportedly killed a large share of them, and fruit growing in the town declined after that.
- Birch Bridge, settled around 1805The hamlet of West Walworth, near the western town line, was settled around 1805 and was first known as Birch Bridge. The artist Charles Livingston Bull was born there in 1874.
- Gananda, begun in 1971Gananda, near the southern town line, was started in 1971 as a planned community. It grew large enough to have its own school system, Gananda Central, one of three districts that serve the town.
