About Marion, New York

Marion is a town of 4,566 people in Wayne County, set near the middle of the county about 20 miles east of Rochester and 50 miles west of Syracuse. Its land was once part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase, and the first settlers made their homes here around 1795.

For its first decades the area belonged to the Town of Williamson. On April 18, 1825, it became a separate town under the name Winchester, but that name lasted barely a year. In 1826 the town was renamed Marion, the name it has carried ever since.

  • Named for Francis MarionThe town's name honors Francis Marion, a brigadier general from South Carolina who became a hero of the Revolutionary War. Residents chose his name in 1826, replacing Winchester, the name the town was given when it split from Williamson.
  • The hamlet at the centerA hamlet also called Marion sits near the middle of the town, where County Roads 207 and 216 meet. The town's government offices are located there.
  • 4,566 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 4,566 people in Marion, compared with 4,746 in 2010.
