About Pultneyville, New York

Pultneyville was a hotbed of abolitionism. The village was also a final stop on the Underground Railroad. Here, people escaping slavery were hidden under the hatches of vessels. They were smuggled across Lake Ontario to Canada and freedom.

Before it took its present name, Pultneyville was known as Appleboom. An apple tree stood at the very tip of a bank west of the creek. Its long limb reached out over the water at a slant, like the boom on a ship.
