About the Town of Palmyra, New York

The town was created in 1789 and was first called Swift's Landing, after its founder, John Swift. It was also known as the District of Tolland. In 1796 it took the name Palmyra, after the ancient city in Syria. By 1800 almost one thousand people lived here.

Palmyra is where the Latter Day Saint movement began. Joseph Smith's family farmed land on the line between Palmyra and Manchester. In 1830 printer E.B. Grandin first published the Book of Mormon in the village. In 2000 the church built a temple on part of the old Smith farm.

  • Early Erie Canal townThe Erie Canal reached Palmyra in 1822. The full canal was not finished to its western end until 1825.
