About Macedon, New York

Macedon is a town of 9,270 people in the southwest corner of Wayne County, east of Rochester. Seneca people lived on this land before settlers came. It was opened for settlement in 1788, when it was bought from Massachusetts in the Phelps and Gorham Purchase, and Webb and Hannah Harwood arrived as the first settlers in 1789.

Digging on the Erie Canal began in 1817 and drew many new families. In 1823, while the work was still underway, the western half of Palmyra became the Town of Macedon, named for the ancient Greek kingdom where Alexander the Great was born. After the canal opened in 1825, new ports grew along its banks at Wayneport and at the Village of Macedon, which was centered on Lock 30.

  • The Lower Macedon LockLock 60 of the Enlarged Erie Canal was built just east of the village in 1841 with a single chamber, and a second chamber was added in 1874. It lifted westbound boats 10.02 feet until it was abandoned in 1914. Its remains now stand in a park beside the canal trail near Quaker Road.
  • Gallup's Bridge of 1881Change Bridge #39 was built in 1881 west of where O'Neil and Quaker roads meet. Change bridges let a towpath cross from one bank of the canal to the other, and this one had an iron lattice truss and a wooden deck. Today only its foundations remain.
  • Macedon Academy, 1841 to 1902For more than sixty years the Macedon Academy taught students who had finished district school but were not yet ready for college. It earned a reputation as a model of good schooling in its day.
  • Soldiers for the UnionDuring the Civil War, Macedon raised part of Company B of the 160th New York Volunteer Infantry. The whole town held only a little over 2,500 people at the time.
