About New Bremen, New York

New Bremen is a town of 2,785 people on the eastern side of Lewis County, northeast of Lowville, the county seat. The first settlers arrived around 1798, and many of the families who followed them came from Germany. In 1848 the state carved the town out of parts of Croghan and Watson, and it took its name from the German city of Bremen.

  • Laid out in 1826Charles Dayan laid out the community of New Bremen in 1826, more than twenty years before the town itself was formed. The hamlet once went by the name Dayansville. It grew in the western part of the town, along the road that is now NY-812.
  • Between two riversThe Black River runs along New Bremen's whole western edge and forms its boundary. The Beaver River, which feeds the Black, marks the town's northeastern line, and a small piece of the Village of Croghan reaches into New Bremen where the river meets the northern border.
