About the Town of Lowville, New York
Daniel Kelley came to Lowville from Middletown, Connecticut, in 1798 with his six sons. With help from neighbors he raised a sawmill and a two-story house. His son Datus worked the mill, then wed Sara Dean in 1810 and moved to Ohio. The couple later bought Kelleys Island in Lake Erie and founded a settlement there.
Rich soil on the Black River Flats made Lowville dairy country. The Black River Canal came in 1851 and the railroad in 1867, and industry followed. Lowville became home to the world's largest maker of bowling pins and the biggest cream cheese plant in the nation.
