About New Hope, Pennsylvania

New Hope is a Bucks County borough on the west bank of the Delaware River, at the mouth of Aquetong Creek. Bridge Street follows the original route of Old York Road, once the main highway between Philadelphia and New York City. The borough had 2,612 residents in the 2020 census, and tourism is its primary industry.

  • From Ferries to MillsThe settlement was known as Wells' Ferry and Coryell's Ferry before taking its present name from Benjamin Parry's rebuilt New Hope Mills after a 1790 fire.
  • Crossing the DelawareThe first bridge opened in 1814; the 1903 Pumpkin Flood destroyed that covered span, and its steel replacement opened in 1904.
  • Railroad RevivalThe New Hope Branch was completed in 1891, while scenic excursions on the New Hope and Ivyland Railroad began in 1966.
  • Bucks County PlayhouseLong associated with stage productions, the Bucks County Playhouse reopened in 2012 after an extensive renovation.
