About New York, New York

New York is a city of 8,804,190 people on New York Harbor, at the state's southern tip. Its five boroughs are Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Before Europeans came, Munsee-speaking Lenape lived across this land, which they called Lenapehoking. Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed into the harbor in 1524, and Henry Hudson arrived in 1609, looking for a passage to the Orient on behalf of the Dutch East India Company.

The Dutch set up a fur trading post on Governors Island in 1624 and began building Fort Amsterdam on Manhattan the next year. In 1626 the settlement took the name New Amsterdam, and in 1653 it was chartered as a city. Peter Stuyvesant handed it to English troops under Colonel Richard Nicolls in 1664 without bloodshed, and it was renamed for the Duke of York. The Dutch seized it again in 1673 and called it New Orange, but they gave it back to England in November 1674, and the name New York stuck. After independence it was the national capital from 1785 until 1790, and the five boroughs were joined into the modern city in 1898.

  • Bought for 60 guildersIn 1626 Peter Minuit, director of New Netherland for the Dutch West India Company, bought Manhattan from a small Lenape band called the Canarsie. The price was goods worth 60 guilders, about $900 in 2018 money. The popular tale that the island sold for $24 in glass beads has been disproved.
  • The wall on Wall StreetNew Amsterdam ran from the southern tip of Manhattan up to today's Wall Street. In 1653 the settlers put up a 12-foot wooden stockade along that line to guard the town against raids by Native Americans and the English.
  • Zenger's trial in 1735John Peter Zenger was charged with seditious libel for criticizing colonial governor William Cosby. He was tried in Manhattan in 1735 and acquitted, and the verdict became a foundation for a free press in North America.
  • The Revolution's biggest battleThe Stamp Act Congress met here in October 1765. No fight of the Revolutionary War was larger than the Battle of Long Island, waged in August 1776 in what is now Brooklyn. That November the British routed the Continental Army at Fort Washington, and George Washington retreated across the Hudson to New Jersey. New York stayed the British headquarters in North America until their troops left in 1783.
